Composed in 1934, when Kurt Weill sought refuge in Paris.
Beneath the dark waters of the Seine,
at the bottom of the river that winds through Paris,
lie the feelings the city has cast away—
human sorrow, secret longings, grief,
and even the shadows of evil.
The Seine gathers them all.
She receives what people and the city can no longer hold,
cradling their abandoned souls
and letting them sink into her silent depths.
This song is a lament of fleeting lives,
a quiet hymn to love,
and to all that drifts away in the flow of time.
